Superfood Series: m a c a

For the last post of my Superfood Series I chose what is arguably my favorite. Maca powder. I planned on posting this at an earlier date, but my house was struck with a stomach bug and daddy and daughter were both down meaning mom was on nurse duty. So without further ado, I present to you one of the strongest, most amazing natural superfoods. Maca root is a plant that is grown in high altitude regions in South America. It is part of the cruciferous family like broccoli and cabbage, but due to its unique properties its considered one of the world’s natural “superfoods”.

One of the main reasons I began using Maca Powder was for its hormone balancing properties. I started using it the day after my baby girl was born to help fight off those baby blues us new mamas are prone to experience. I drank an amazing postpartum smoothie every morning for a few months with this as one of the main ingredients. Its ability to balance and stabilize the body’s hormonal, nervous, and cardiovascular systems is amazing. It aids new moms in coping with stress, stabilizing her mood and energy, and it is a nutritional powerhouse for anyones diet especially new mamas.

Now lets talk energy. Those who use maca powder regularly tend to feel more awake, energized, and driven all of which happens quickly after you begin to use it. Since maca is known to lower levels of anxiety and depression, it causes increased levels stamina and mood. It is unknown exactly how it does this, but since it stabilizes blood sugar levels (which decrease energy spikes and dips) and maintains adrenal health, maca can regulate mood and energy throughout the day.

Another incredible reason to add maca in you diet is its ability to act as a natural antioxidant. Maca root boosts levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase, which are two major disease fighters in the body. It not only improves your immune system and disease resistance, but also it helps balance proper levels of cholesterol in the body. Plus, it lowers levels of glucose in the blood.

My favorite way to use maca is by adding it to my daily smoothie. Its mild, malty/sweet flavor makes it easy to add into any mixture you prefer.
